Does usage of Avalara cost extra?
The answer is No! Advanced Billing includes the usage of Avalara AvaTax Managed tax service with all of our plans.
Can I use different tax rates per product?
Unfortunately, with Avalara AvaTax or Custom Taxes, you cannot configure individual taxes per product.
Why is my customer being charged tax even though their VAT number is valid?
If your Subscriber has entered a VAT number that is preceeded by their country code, they will still be charged tax. For a Subscriber to enter a valid tax number, they must remove the country 2 character code at the front of the number.
Example:
SE112233445566 will not allow your customer to be tax-exempt. 112233445566 will allow your customer to be tax exempt.
Additionally, if dashes are included in the VAT number, they will need to be removed in order for the Subscriber to be tax exempt.
How do I locate my tax history?
This can be found by navigating to the “Transactions” tab and choosing the dates for which you want to see data. Once you have the list filtered, select the “Export Current View” to produce a comma-separated file.
There will be a short wait while the file is created, and then you can download it and open it in your spreadsheet program. The column labeled “kind” (column L) will indicate if the transaction type is tax. You can sort or filter the document by “tax” in that column to get totals or individualized history.
How do I mark a subscription/customer as tax exempt?
This can be done by navigating to the “Customers” tab and editing the appropriate customer’s tax exempt property. By doing this the subscription attached to that customer will also be considered as tax exempt and will not include tax charges during billing processes.
Some of my tax codes calculate improperly, why is that?
All tax codes and state tax that come from Avalara uses their calculation to provide the proper tax. Sometimes things calculated will be different based on rules imposed on that tax. Please make sure you read into the specific rules for tax code and state you are using.
Example:
Texas tax will only charge tax on 80% of the value on an invoice. So if there is a $100 charge, the tax may say it is an 8% but will come to be $6.40. That is because it is taking 8% of $80, which is 80% of the $100 invoice value.
