# Understand Data Export

You can export Subscription, Customer, and Transaction data from Maxio as CSV files to support financial reporting, audits, and business analysis. Exports can be initiated through the user interface or via API, and filters can be applied to tailor the results to your specific needs. If what you need is a complete copy rather than a filtered slice — for a migration or an audit — see How do I export all my data?.

## Export types

The following table summarizes three of the most commonly used export types and what each file contains. Maxio also supports exporting Products, Components, Invoice Line Items, and Tax History; see the field references linked under Related Information for the complete list.

| Export Type | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Subscriptions** | Details per subscriber including plan, state, dates, and MRR. |
| **Customers** | Contact and billing details for each customer. |
| **Transactions** | Payment, refund, and credit transactions with full metadata. |

> To include **components** (or **products**, on sites using the newer Products catalog terminology) in your Subscription exports, enable the Components option in your CSV Exports settings. From Advanced Billing, go to Config > Settings and scroll to CSV Exports.

## How to export data

Navigate to the relevant section of the Maxio application, such as **Billing > Subscriptions**. Look for the **Export** button in the upper-right corner above the table. If filters are applied to the table, the exported CSV includes only the filtered results.

### Export via API

Maxio Advanced Billing's own API Exports feature covers Subscriptions, Invoices, and Proforma Invoices; refer to the API documentation for details. To run and export Maxio Core reports (such as Cohort, Days Sales Outstanding, or one-click reports) instead, see [Export Report Data via Maxio API](https://docs.maxio.com/insights/data-export/export-report-data-via-maxio-api). This is a separate API for a different product.

## What happens when an export is already in progress

Advanced Billing doesn't start a second export while an identical one you started is still running. An export counts as identical when it has the same export type, the same Site, and the same filters and options. Exports with different filters, a different type, or on a different Site still run at the same time, and exports started by other users don't affect yours. An export stops counting as in progress once it completes, or 24 hours after you started it.

While an identical export is running, the export button on the page is unavailable and reads **Export in progress…**. Export buttons in a dropdown menu instead add **(in progress)** to their label. A **Force new export** button appears next to the export button. While the page stays open, the button checks the export's status periodically and becomes available again once the export finishes.

![Transactions page header with a disabled Export in progress button and an orange Force new export button beside it](https://docs.maxio.com/content-images/insights/data-export/understand-data-export/export-in-progress-force-new-export.png)

> The page stops checking after about an hour. After that, the export button becomes available again even if the export is still running.

If you start an export while an identical one is running, the new export doesn't start and Advanced Billing displays the message "An export of this type is already in progress." On pages with a **Force new export** button, the message also tells you to use that button to start another. Other export screens, such as the export options on data tables and export dialogs, display the message without offering a way to override it.

If an export appears to be stuck, you can use **Force new export** to start another one anyway.

> Forcing a new export runs a duplicate alongside the one already in progress, and both exports may take longer to finish.

**To force a new export**

1. Next to the unavailable export button, click **Force new export**.
2. In the **Force a new export?** dialog, click **Force new export** to start the export, or click **Cancel** to keep only the export that is already running.

## Export notifications

After initiating an export, Maxio notifies the user both via email and in-app when the export is ready for download.

You can configure your notification preferences on the System Alerts Subscription Preferences page.
