Custom Fields Overview

You can use custom fields (also called metafields or metadata) in Maxio to collect and store additional information from your customers. Custom fields are supported on Public Signup Pages, within the Billing Portal, and in Subscription and Customer records. This data can also be displayed on Invoices or statements, and exported via the Subscriptions CSV export.

Many merchants use custom fields to gather data that is critical to their operations. This can include collecting details about a purchase or meeting a customer's post-purchase expectations. Examples include:

  • T-shirt size
  • “Are you a new customer?”
  • “How did you hear about us?”
  • “Is this purchase a gift?”
  • Purchase order number
  • Special instructions for handling
  • “Would you like a follow-up call?”
  • “How should we contact you?” Email / phone / text
  • Billing address for invoice-based subscribers without a credit card on file

Additionally, custom fields can be editable by subscribers in the Billing Portal, if a value was entered during signup.

Alternatively, custom fields can be populated with internal-use data. These fields can be hidden from subscribers and used to categorize Subscriptions or Customers. For example, you can use a custom field to define the maximum number of components a Subscription is allowed to purchase.

Custom fields offer a flexible way to collect and manage extra data beyond product selection, helping you meet your business needs.
