Enable Credit Card Surcharging in Maxio Payments

Activate credit card surcharging in Maxio Payments after completing the required approval, underwriting, agreement, and buyer notification steps. An administrator must confirm the surcharge activation statement before surcharging is enabled for an eligible account.

How can I get surcharging turned on?

To enable surcharging, you will need to work with your Maxio Account Manager. Activation requires:

• Approval and underwriting through Maxio Payments and the payment processor (Adyen)
• A signed Maxio Payments agreement that includes the surcharge clause
• Providing at least 30 days’ notice prior to activation (your Account Manager will coordinate this)

Once these steps are complete, your Account Manager activates the feature for your account.

As the merchant, you are responsible for alerting your buyers that credit cards will be surcharged ahead of the planned surcharge activation date. To identify which buyers will be affected, see Identify Buyers Impacted by Your Surcharge Settings.

Confirm surcharging activation

When you turn on surcharging for a country, Maxio Payments shows an Enable Maxio Surcharge Solution confirmation before the setting activates. By selecting Agree, you confirm that surcharging applies to credit cards only, that your surcharge rate does not exceed your actual cost of card acceptance, that your surcharge program discloses the fee to buyers before and at checkout and as a separate line item on receipts, and that you've reviewed the applicable state laws and card network rules. Maxio enables the surcharging functionality but does not validate or manage compliance on your behalf.

How the confirmation works

• Required before activation: The country-level surcharging toggle does not activate until you select Agree in this confirmation.
• Only gates the country-level toggle: Enabling or customizing an individual state or territory's rate doesn't trigger this confirmation. It only appears when you turn on surcharging for the country as a whole.
• Required each time surcharging is enabled: The confirmation appears every time you enable or re-enable surcharging, even if you accepted it previously.
• Change history recorded: Turning surcharging on or off is recorded in the surcharge settings changelog, along with who made the change and when.

Enable surcharging with the confirmation

States and U.S. territories inherit the country-level rate until you customize them individually.

To enable surcharging

1. Navigate to Maxio Payments > Settings > Surcharging.
2. Turn on the Country Rules toggle for the applicable country.
3. In the Enable Maxio Surcharge Solution confirmation, review the statement carefully.
4. Select Agree to activate surcharging for the country.

If you select Cancel or close the confirmation, surcharging remains disabled.
