Create a Taxed Subscription with Sphere

Use a taxed subscription to confirm that Maxio can calculate Sphere sales tax for taxable products or components before billing.

Before you start

Confirm that the Sphere setup and required tax calculation data are complete before creating a taxed subscription. Missing addresses, taxability settings, or credentials can prevent tax from calculating correctly.

• Sphere is enabled in Maxio.
• The tax origin address is complete.
• The customer has the address required by your Tax Destination Address setting.
• The subscription includes taxable products or components.
• The site currency is supported by your Sphere setup.

Step 1: Create or update the product catalog

The product catalog controls which products and components are taxable. Review the catalog before creating the subscription so Sphere receives the correct line item details.

1. Define products or plans in Maxio Advanced Billing.
2. Mark products or components as taxable when sales tax should apply.
3. Add Sphere product tax codes when Sphere should use a specific product category.

Step 2: Create the customer record

The customer record must include the address required by your Tax Destination Address setting. Sphere uses the customer destination address to calculate applicable sales tax.

1. Enter the customer address information required by your Tax Destination Address setting.
2. For shipping-based tax settings, collect a complete shipping address.
3. For billing-based tax settings, collect complete billing address details on the payment profile or signup form.

Step 3: Configure the subscription

After the catalog and customer record are ready, add taxable products or components to the subscription. Preview the subscription or invoice before completing signup or issuing the invoice.

1. Add taxable products and components to the subscription.
2. Choose a supported site currency for your Sphere setup.
3. Preview the subscription or invoice to confirm tax is calculated before billing.
4. Complete signup or issue the invoice when the tax amount looks correct.

Test before going live

Test the full Sphere workflow in Sandbox before using a Production key. This helps confirm tax amounts, jurisdiction details, exemptions, and Sphere metadata before live invoices are created.

1. Connect your Maxio test site to a Sphere Sandbox account.
2. Run sample subscriptions, invoices, voids, and refunds.
3. Verify tax amounts, jurisdiction breakdowns, and exemption behavior.
4. Confirm Sphere metadata, including transaction ID and jurisdiction detail, is stored on invoices.

Once validated, switch to the Live API key on your production site.
