A Wallet Billing Product is what a wallet bills against: it sets the unit a wallet's balance is counted in and the price of the wallet units a customer purchases or tops up. Create one from Catalog > Wallet Products before you back a feature with a wallet, since that setup only lists Wallet Products that already carry a price point.
How to create a wallet product
You create a wallet product on its own page rather than in a dialog. The page has a Product Details card and a Product Pricing card.
-
Go to Catalog > Wallet Products and click Create Wallet Product.
-
In Product Details, enter the details of the product:
- Product Name (required) is shown to customers and on statements.
- API Handle is generated from the Product Name as you type. You can edit it before you save. Changing a handle may break API integrations, so it can't be changed after the product is created.
- Accounting Code (optional) is an internal ID or SKU number.
- Item Category classifies what you're selling: Business Software, Consumer Software, Digital Services, Physical Goods, Other, or None. See Understanding Product Settings for what each category covers.
- Unit Name (required) is the singular, lowercase unit a wallet balance is counted in, for example "API request". It can't be changed after the product is created.
- Product Family always reads "Not applicable", because Wallet Billing Products sit outside Product Families.
- Description appears on the wallet purchase and top-up line items.
-
In Product Pricing, review the first price point. A new Wallet Billing Product starts with one price point named "Standard". Edit the Price Point Name if you need to. The Price Point Handle is generated from the name in the same way as the API Handle, and each price point needs its own handle.
-
Choose a Pricing Scheme for the price point:
- Per unit takes one Price. Any quantity of wallet units purchased is charged the same price per unit.
- Volume takes one or more brackets. The purchased quantity sets one bracket, and every unit in the purchase is charged at that bracket's price per unit.
- Tiered takes one or more brackets. Each bracket of the purchased quantity is charged at its own price per unit, and the amounts are added together.
- Stairstep takes one or more brackets. The purchase is charged one flat price for the whole bracket its quantity falls into.
Each bracket has a Starting Quantity, an Ending Quantity, and a price. Click Add Pricing Bracket to add another one, and leave the last bracket's Ending Quantity blank for no upper limit. See Use Product Pricing Schemes for more on how each scheme works.
-
To offer more than one price point, click Add Price Point and repeat steps 3 and 4. The first price point in the list is the product's default price point, which the wallet setup preselects.
-
Set Tax included in price? to Yes if the price you enter already includes tax. This option is only available once a tax provider is fully configured for your site.
-
Check the Billing Preview panel beside the price points. It recalculates as you edit the default price point, so you can check the charge at different quantities before you save.
-
Click Save. To leave without saving anything, click Cancel instead.
How to edit a wallet product
You edit a wallet product's details from the same Wallet Products catalog.
- In Catalog > Wallet Products, open the action menu on the product's row and choose Edit.
- Change any of the Product Details fields. The API Handle, Unit Name, and Product Family can't be changed.
- Click Save.
What to expect
Here is how saving works, and what the edit page leaves alone:
- Saving a new product creates the product and all of its price points together. If a price point is invalid, the product isn't created.
- A price can't be negative. If you try to save one, "Price can't be negative." appears next to the field until you correct it.
- After you save or cancel, you return to the Wallet Products catalog.
- The edit page doesn't change pricing. In place of the Product Pricing card, it shows a View Price Points button that opens a drawer listing every price point the product has. You can open the same drawer from the Price Points column in the catalog.
