Set Up Mandrill Email Delivery
Applies to: Advanced Billing
Last updated on Oct 16, 2026
Mandrill is a second email delivery provider for Advanced Billing, alongside Mailgun. It exists mainly for customers migrating from e-Bill to the Maxio invoicing suite: those customers often already have a working, DNS-verified Mandrill account, and this lets you connect it directly instead of standing up a brand-new Mailgun sending domain and publishing fresh DNS records. If you don't already have a Mandrill account, see Set Up Enhanced Email Delivery instead, which sends through Maxio's own Mailgun account.
Before you start
A site can only have one active custom email delivery provider at a time. If Mailgun's Enhanced Email Delivery is already active for your site, the Mandrill card shows the warning "Disable Mailgun custom domain to use Mandrill" and its fields stay unavailable until you disable Enhanced Email Delivery.
There are two ways to connect Mandrill:
- Custom Mandrill, where you bring your own Mandrill account and API key. Setting this up requires Admin or Owner access, and it's the path most e-Bill migrations use.
- Maxio-managed Mandrill, where Maxio Support assigns your site a subaccount on Maxio's own Mandrill account. Only Maxio Support can turn this on or move a site onto it.
Connect your own Mandrill account
This is the path most e-Bill migrations use.
To set up Custom Mandrill
- Go to Tools > Email Insights and open the Setup Info tab.
- Find the Mandrill card.
- Turn on Use Custom Mandrill (send emails from your own Mandrill account).
- Enter your Custom Mandrill Key, the API key from your Mandrill account.
- Optionally, enter a Custom Mandrill Subaccount to route all e-Bill emails from this site through that subaccount.
- Click Test Connection to confirm the key works before saving.
- Click Save.
Advanced Billing validates your API key, and your subaccount if you entered one, before turning Mandrill on. An invalid key or a subaccount that doesn't exist on your Mandrill account returns an error and nothing is saved.
To update your key later, enter a new one in the same field and save; leaving it blank keeps the key you already have on file.
Maxio-managed Mandrill
If Maxio Support has set your site up with a Maxio-managed subaccount instead, that subaccount appears above the Custom Mandrill fields, visible only to Support. You can still edit the sending domain described below even when Maxio Support manages the account itself.
Add a sending domain (optional)
Either mode accepts an optional sending domain. Enter it in the Sending Domain field and click Save. Adding one doesn't block activation, but once you save it, Advanced Billing checks the domain's SPF, DKIM, DKIM2, and DMARC records against Mandrill and shows a status card for each, along with a Last tested time. A failing or missing record shows what's wrong so you know what to fix with whoever administers your DNS.
Switch or disable Mandrill
Click Disable Mandrill on the same card to turn the integration off. Disabling it, or moving a site from Custom Mandrill to Maxio-managed, removes the webhook Advanced Billing registered on your Mandrill account.

Delivery status for mail sent through Mandrill (delivered, bounced, rejected, marked as spam) doesn't yet appear in Email Archives the way Mailgun's does. See Review Email Archives for what is tracked today.
To send through Maxio's own Mailgun account instead, see Set Up Enhanced Email Delivery.
