Create a Planless Subscription
Last updated on Aug 27, 2026
Build a Subscription directly from individual Products instead of assigning it a single Plan, so each Product can have its own billing interval.
To create a Planless Subscription
- From Advanced Billing, go to Billing > Subscriptions, then click Create Subscription.
- Leave the Plan selection blank and add Products individually.
- Select a billing interval for each Product. If any Product is missing an interval, Maxio blocks Subscription creation with the error "Planless subscriptions cannot contain products without a billing interval."
- Note that the Set to Evergreen checkbox is selected by default. It typically stays selected for a Planless Subscription, since there's no single Plan price point to define a term length, and only clears if a selected Product's price point defines a fixed expiration.
- Complete the Customer and payment details.
- Click Create Subscription.
Best practices
Keep these practices in mind when managing Planless Subscriptions:
- Product Family: All Products in a Planless Subscription must belong to the same Product Family. Mixing families returns the error "All products must belong to the same product family."
- Reports and lists: The Subscriptions Index and Transactions Report both relabel their Product column to Plan; for a Planless Subscription, that column displays a count like "3 Products" instead of a Plan name.
- Navigation shortcut: In the Subscription Summary, click the (Product Family Name) X Products link to view detailed Product allocations.
