Connect Taxwire to a Maxio site, test the connection, update your Taxwire API key, or disable the integration.
Before you start
Review the prerequisites and limitations in Taxwire Integration Overview before enabling Taxwire.
Implementation order
Follow these steps in order so product categories, exemptions, and required addresses are in place before tax begins calculating on live invoices.
- Get a Taxwire API key.
- Enable the Taxwire integration in Maxio.
- Configure the tax origin address.
- Assign Taxwire product categories to products and components.
- Apply customer exemption categories where applicable.
- Test the connection before relying on it for live invoices.
Step 1: Get a Taxwire API key
In the Taxwire dashboard, generate an API key for your account. Unlike some other tax integrations, Taxwire doesn't separate sandbox and production keys by environment. The same kind of key is used whether you're validating the setup or billing live customers, so double-check you're connecting the account you intend to use before saving it in Maxio.
Step 2: Enable Taxwire in Maxio
Administrators can manage the integration from Config > Taxes in Maxio.
- Go to Config > Taxes.
- Find the Connect Taxwire Tax Automation card and select Enable Taxwire.
- Enter your Taxwire API key.
- (Optional) In Start syncing transactions from, enter the first invoice date to send to Taxwire.
- Save the settings by clicking Connect Taxwire.
When you save, Maxio stores the credentials and switches the site's tax type to Taxwire.
Invoices dated before the Start syncing transactions from date are taxed as usual but aren't sent to Taxwire. Leave the field empty to sync all invoices. Changing the date later doesn't resend skipped invoices or remove invoices that already synced.
Test the connection
Use Test Connection to verify your API key before committing it. The test attempts a live call to Taxwire using the key you entered. If the test fails, Maxio displays an error so the issue can be corrected before going live.

Edit or rotate your Taxwire key
If Taxwire is already connected and you need to update the key, select Edit on the Taxwire card, enter the new key, and click Save Configuration. You can also change the Start syncing transactions from date here. Maxio keeps the site marked as Taxwire-enabled and uses the new key for subsequent calls.
The connected-state card, including the masked key and the Disable action, stays visible even if Maxio Support or your CSM later turns off the Taxwire add-on for your site, so you can always see the connection status and disable it. Editing the key while the add-on is off is not available.

Disable Taxwire
Selecting Disable and confirming with Yes, Disable removes the stored credentials, reverts the site's tax type to custom, and stops Taxwire tax calls. Any errors during disablement are logged and surfaced in the UI.
