Use the Taxwire integration to calculate sales tax for invoices, refunds, and voids. Maxio sends customer, subscription, invoice, and catalog data to Taxwire so Taxwire can return real-time tax calculations and jurisdiction details.
The Taxwire integration must be enabled for your site by Maxio Support or your CSM before the Taxwire setup card appears in your tax settings.
Once it's enabled, the rest of the integration is covered across the remaining articles. Set Up Taxwire in Maxio Invoicing Suite connects your account, and Configure Taxwire Tax Calculation Data prepares the site, catalog, and customer data Taxwire needs before a rate can be accurate. How Taxwire Calculates Tax in Maxio explains what Maxio sends and what comes back on each eligible charge. To confirm the result before you bill, work through Create a Taxed Subscription with Taxwire, and see Taxwire Troubleshooting and FAQs when a rate comes back wrong or missing. Taxwire doesn't support Maxio Core contracts yet, so Create a Taxed Contract with Taxwire covers that workflow once it's available.
Key capabilities
The Taxwire integration supports real-time tax calculation, tax metadata storage, and transaction synchronization from Maxio. These capabilities help keep invoices and tax reporting aligned across both systems.
- Single source of credentials: Site settings hold your Taxwire API key and let you test, update, or disable the connection from the Maxio UI.
- Preview and committed tax quotes: Maxio calls Taxwire for a soft quote when previewing taxes and commits the transaction when the charge is final.
- Automated invoice metadata: Successful Taxwire calls are converted into structured metadata, including jurisdiction breakdowns and the applicable tax rate.
- Voids and refunds stay in sync: Maxio updates or reverses the original Taxwire transaction when an invoice is voided or refunded, rather than leaving Taxwire's records out of date.
- Tax-inclusive pricing: Taxwire supports products and components priced with tax already included, and Maxio recalculates the taxable and tax amounts on those charges from Taxwire's response.
- Reverse charge handling: For VAT scenarios where the customer self-assesses tax, Taxwire applies the reverse charge and Maxio reflects it on the invoice.
- Error transparency: Taxwire API failures are surfaced as user-friendly errors in the UI, logged internally, and reported to monitoring systems.
What syncs
Maxio and Taxwire exchange tax calculation and transaction data when the integration is enabled. The direction of the sync depends on whether Maxio is sending transaction details or receiving tax calculation results.
| Direction | Data |
|---|---|
| Maxio to Taxwire | Invoices, invoice voids, refunds, customer details, and catalog details when supported. |
| Taxwire to Maxio | Real-time tax calculation results and jurisdiction breakdowns. |
Prerequisites
Before using Taxwire with Maxio, confirm that your Maxio site and Taxwire account are ready. These requirements help prevent setup errors and failed tax calculations.
- The Taxwire integration add-on is enabled for your site.
- A valid tax origin address is configured in Maxio.
- Your Taxwire API key is available.
- Your Taxwire account has the regions and product categories you sell in configured.
- Enable taxes is turned on for the products and components that tax should apply to.
- Taxwire product categories are assigned when a product or component needs a specific tax treatment.
- Customer billing or shipping addresses are collected based on your site's tax address setting.
A site is considered fully configured for Taxwire when a valid tax origin address is set in Maxio and a valid Taxwire API key has been saved.

Customer responsibilities
Even with the integration enabled, customers remain responsible for maintaining the tax settings that Taxwire uses to calculate, report, and file taxes.
- Product taxability decisions.
- Product category assignment.
- Customer address collection and completeness.
- Tax origin configuration.
- Nexus configuration.
- Filing cadence and reporting setup, if used.
Maxio handles the data flow. Taxwire handles the tax decisions.
Limitations
Review these limitations before enabling Taxwire. They can affect provider selection and supported workflows.
- Only one tax provider can be active per site. Only one of Taxwire, Avalara, Anrok, TaxJar, or Sphere can be active on a site at a time.
- Filing and registrations are managed in Taxwire. Filing is configured and executed inside Taxwire, not Maxio.
- Consolidated invoices are not supported in this release. Tax on consolidated (parent/child) invoices is out of scope for the initial release.
- Core to e-Bill is not supported. This release focuses on Maxio Invoicing Suite.
