Understand Tax Options
Last updated on Aug 28, 2026
This article on Taxes is specific to the Advanced Billing only workflow. For Taxes rendering on eBill using the Maxio Core workflow, see Understand the AvaTax Integration.
Advanced Billing supports several ways to calculate and collect tax: custom tax rules you define and maintain yourself, several third-party tax automation services, and the ability to mark Customers or Subscriptions as tax exempt. These tools help you apply the correct tax rules across global regions and billing scenarios.
Tax setting options
Advanced Billing offers the following tax setting options:
- Custom Taxes: Tax rules you define and maintain yourself, for any country or region, without relying on a third-party tax service.
- Numeral: Automated tax calculation and compliance through the Numeral tax service, currently in beta.
- Sphere: Automated tax calculation and compliance through the Sphere tax service, currently in beta.
- Anrok: Automated SaaS tax calculation and compliance through the Anrok tax service. Ask Maxio Support or your CSM to enable it for your site.
- TaxJar: Automated sales tax calculation and compliance through the TaxJar tax service, currently in beta.
- Bring Your Own AvaTax: Connect your own existing Avalara AvaTax account for more granular tax rules and additional Avalara services, with your tax rules and settings managed directly in Avalara.
- Advanced Billing Managed Sales Tax: Automatic sales tax collection for US and Canadian merchants, as well as European Union VAT taxes. You pick the regions you're responsible for collecting tax in, and Advanced Billing uses the Avalara tax service to find and apply the correct rates.
- Tax Exempt Customers: Mark a Customer or Subscription as tax exempt.
