Change Billing Date and Billing Time

Learn how to change the billing date and time for subscriptions in Maxio, including Evergreen and Term subscriptions with multifrequency Components. This article covers use of the Change Billing Date functions and a workflow for changing billing time on Term subscriptions to avoid misalignment.

Changing the Billing Date for Evergreen Subscriptions

To adjust the next Billing Date and Billing Time for an Evergreen Subscription, use the Change Product Billing Date action on the Subscription detail page.

  • The next Billing Date/Time defines when the next charge is assessed.
  • Invoices are processed in 20‑minute batches. The scheduled time indicates when billing should occur, but actual Invoices may issue shortly afterward.

Calendar Billing Alignment

If the Subscription uses calendar billing, you can choose to align the calendar Billing Date with the new renewal date. If you do not align them, the next charge may be prorated. To avoid proration, align both dates.

Time‑of‑Day Editing

You can adjust the time of day that the billing occurs:

  • This setting is available on the same Change Product Billing Date screen.
  • You can select any future time or up to 2 hours in the past. The billing joins the next processing batch.
  • The Billing Time is global: if your Components bill on the same day, they’ll use the same time.

This capability is only available for Evergreen Subscriptions.

Component Billing Dates and Multifrequency Subscriptions

Subscriptions that include Components with independent billing intervals are considered multifrequency Subscriptions. These require special handling to keep all billing events aligned. For more details, see the Multifrequency Subscriptions article.

If your Subscription includes:

  • A product (for example, base plan)
  • One or more Components (for example, usage-based add-ons or quantity-based charges)
And these Components have independent billing intervals, you must manually update each Component’s Billing Date to stay in sync.

Why This Matters

If you change only the Product Billing Date in a multifrequency Subscription:

  • The product will bill on one date.
  • The Component(s) will bill on a different date.

This misalignment can cause confusion for billing managers and Customers.

How to Update Component Billing Dates

  1. Go to the Subscription.
  2. Open the Subscription Components tab.
  3. For each Component, click Change Billing Date.
  4. In the date editor dialog:
    • Select a specific Billing Date.
    • Use the alignment feature to sync to either:
      • The product Billing Date
      • Another Component Billing Date

Workaround: Changing Billing Date and Time on Term Subscriptions

To change the Billing Date or Billing Time for a Term Subscription, use the following workflow. For more information on Subscription types, refer to Term and Evergreen Subscription Options.

  1. Temporarily switch the Subscription to Evergreen.
    • On the Subscription detail page, update the Subscription type to Evergreen.
  2. Change the Product Billing Date and Time.
    • Use Change Product Billing Date as usual.
    • Set both the desired date and specific time.
  3. Switch back to Term.
    • Once the date and time are set, change the Subscription back to Term via Subscription Summary > Term > Change > Edit Term.
    • The system will retain the Billing Date and Time configured during the Evergreen phase.

This workaround gives full control over date and time adjustments—even for Subscriptions that must remain on a Term schedule. Once the term is reapplied, billing continues as configured.
